The Eurovision Song Contest 2020 is canceled

The Eurovision Song Contest 2020, which would be held in Rotterdam Ahoy on 12, 14 and 16 May, is canceled. Based on the measures taken by the Dutch and foreign governments, the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) has decided that the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 cannot take place. The importance of the health of artists, employees, fans and visitors, as well as the situation in the Netherlands, Europe and the world are the reasons for this decision by the EBU. The three organizing broadcasters (NPO / NOS / AVROTROS) and the City of Rotterdam fully understand this difficult decision.

Naturally it is a terrible disappointment that the ESC cannot continue this year. Everyone has worked very hard to make ESC2020 an unforgettable edition. But the consequences of the Coronavirus are so severe that it is irresponsible and impossible to continue the ESC in Rotterdam.

The EBU has consulted both the organizing broadcasters and the host city Rotterdam to move the Song Contest to a later date next year. Rotterdam is ready for such a scenario. We would still be able to realise our ambitions in 2021 and still enjoy a fantastic Song Contest edition together. But for now, the health of all fans, residents, visitors, artists, delegations, volunteers and many others involved is the most important. To them we would like to say: Take good care and stay healthy.

Will the Eurovision Song Contest return to Rotterdam in 2021?
Rotterdam is ready for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2021. As Host City we were already preparing for a great party. For the sake of everyone's health the Eurovision Song Contest is cancelled this year. But if it’s up to Rotterdam, we would still like to realise our ambitions in 2021 and enjoy a fantastic edition together. A date has yet to be set.

What does this decision mean for the volunteers?
The selection of the volunteers had already been made and the training dates were already planned. For them this must also be an incredible disappointment. All volunteers are welcome to join the Song Contest next year and celebrate this party together with us!

What about sold tickets? Are they still valid next year?

That is our approach for 2021. But this requires organisational work. More details will follow at a later moment.

What does this mean for hoteliers who kept rooms blocked? Are they going to work under the same arrangements again in 2021?
Of course we hope that we can count on the fantastic cooperation with the hoteliers again next year. But all the details will follow later. The first concern lies now with the hoteliers who are currently affected by the Corona crisis.

Will this cost the City of Rotterdam 15.5 million again in 2021?
Our ambition for next year is the same. Thanks to the experience already gained and all the preparatory work so far, we expect that the additional costs will be less than expected.
